The town of Barnstable includes seven villages within its boundaries. Each village has unique and significant cultural and historical qualities. Centerville, located on the south side, is primarily residential and has a beautiful beach. Osterville is located on the south side, is primarily residential and includes inlets and harbors for fishing and boating. Cotuit is a village located on a peninsula on the south side, is primarily residential and has several small beaches.
CranberriesHyannis is the town's central business/commercial district which includes town offices, the Cape Cod Mall, and a large collection of shops, hotels and restaurants. Hyannis is also a fishing village and its harbor provides steamship access to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Islands. Marstons Mills is primarily residential and is located on Route 28. West Barnstable is located on the north side, is primarily residential and sparsely populated. Barnstable is located on the north side which houses the County Complex and has a working harbor and several small beaches.

Barnstable Schools

The Barnstable public schools system is the largest on the Cape. There is a pre-kindergarten school and five elementary schools serving various grades. The Barnstable Middle School serves grades six and seven, and Barnstable High School serves grades eight through twelve. Barnstable is also home to Cape Cod Community College.

Barnstable is the largest town on Cape Cod and was one of the first to be settled in 1638. Farming, fishing and salt works were its major industries. By the end of the 19th century, there were some 804 ships harbored in the town, but this soon came to a decline with the rise of the railroad and steamships. It was also at this time that Barnstable was becoming a world renouned tourist destination. Prominent Bostonians and presidents summered here, most notably John F Kennedy, for whom a local museum has been dedicated.
