About the Town of Eastham
The town of Eastham was incorporated in 1651. Dissatisfied with Plymouth, in 1644 the directors of the Colony sent a seven-man delegation to scout Eastham for a new site for the center of government. The decision was not to move, but the seven members of the delegation brought their families and established a new town. Eastham has several harbors and abundant shellfish, which attracted these early settlers from the Plymouth Colony.
Fishing and especially farming were early industries in the town, and writers and artists also came to the town. It was in Eastham that Henry Beston wrote The Outermost House. The town is discussed at some length in Henry David Thoreau's Cape Cod.
Historic sites to visit around town include the Captain Penniman House at Fort Hill, the Schoolhouse Museum, the Swift-Daley House, the Eastham Windmill on the town green, and the Three Sisters Lighthouses in the National Seashore. The Salt Pond Visitor Center also has its own museum and a bookstore.
