About the Town of Wellfleet

Find out more about town specific info such as weather and demographics at Wellfleet Town Info.
Wellfleet was settled in the 1650's and it's economy was driven by fishing and the oyster beds. It was home to 30 whaling ships at the time of the American Revolution. With the decline of whaling, the ships were gone by 1900. It was around this time that Guglielmo Marconi built his first wireless station on a bluff in Wellfleet, from which he sent the first radio telegraph transmission from America to England. In 1717 the pirate ship Whdah sank off shore with over 4 tons of gold and silver and 143 of its 145 men. The wreck was found in 1984 and its treasures can be viewed at the Whydah Pirate Museum. Construction of the Chequesset Inn in the late 19th century contributed to the development of a tourist economy in Wellfleet. The town has the second greatest concentration of art galleries on Cape Cod, right after Provincetown.
