Quiet residential West Barnstable on the north side of town is home to the magnificent Sandy Neck beach, a six mile long barrier beach. Just to the east is Barnstable Village, which holds the seat of government on Cape Cod, along with historic buildings, shops and a bustling harbor. The area south of Route 6 holds the other five villages. The largest of these is Hyannis – the Cape’s central business district and home to many fine shops, historic buildings, restaurants, hotels and ferries to the islands. Marston Mills, along Route 28, is mainly residential with pretty ponds and cranberry bogs. Osterville, Cotuit and Centerville are quiet residential villages spread along the Nantucket Sound shoreline with gorgeous beaches, inlets and harbors.

BARNSTABLE EVENTS

The week-long Barnstable County Fair dates back to 1844 and is held each year in mid July. Enjoy live music, animal shows, 4H demonstrations, a petting zoo, arts and crafts, live stock competitions, horse jumping, amusement park rides and games. Tens of thousands of visitors are drawn to this fair each summer. Musicians include popular country, classic rock and pop bands.

The Cape Cod Maritime Days is an annual month-long celebration (starting in May) of the Cape’s seafaring and fishing heritage. Activities are held on and off the water including live music and entertainment, displays by local artists and museums, lighthouse & walking tours, kayaking excursions, harbor cruises, seafood and children’s activities.

The Cape’s largest 4th of July parade is held every year on Hyannis’ Main Street (from Ocean Street to Sea Street) with a variety of floats, bands and live performances. After the parade, an awards ceremony takes place on Hyannis Village Green for the best floats and marching bands. Fireworks go off at 9pm and are visible from all beaches facing Nantucket Sound.

THINGS TO DO IN BARNSTABLE

There are many Barnstable Beaches to choose from. Relax in the sun, go for a swim or take a long stroll while enjoying the scenery and bird watching at Sandy Neck Beach on Cape Cod Bay. More pebbly than sandy, there are lots of dune flora and other plants not commonly seen. Craigville Beach, with its soft sand, is very popular and provides amenities such as bathrooms, showers, lifeguards (in season) and restaurants just across the road. Kalmus and Long Beach have lots of space and great views. There are many small to medium size freshwater beaches in town also, but parking is limited.

If you prefer to be on the water, you can go on a whale watch cruise or catch the ferry for a visit to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket. Go for a sail on a catboat or reserve a fishing charter boat. Go out on a sunset or a lighthouse cruise. There are many possibilities and opportunities to get out on the water from Hyannis.

When the clouds roll in, spend the day checking out the unique specialty stores, galleries and restaurants on Hyannis’ fabulous Main Street. While there, you can also visit the renowned JFK Museum. The museum features multimedia displays and exhibits showcasing the time Kennedy spent with his family on Cape Cod.
