Mashpee is composed of seven communities. Mashpee Neck, in the eastern part of town is the most highly populated and has a yacht club and marina on scenic Popponesset Bay. Monomoscoy Island is a thin peninsula of land surrounded by ponds, rivers and Mashpee Wildlife Refuge. The small Seabrook area lies to the northwest of the refuge. New Seabury is a luxury resort community of second homes on Nantucket Sound. Pomponesset is on the southern part of town with a lovely beach along Nantucket Sound. Picturesque Popponesset Island is connected by road and lies in Popponesset Bay. Beautiful Seconsett Island in Waquoit Bay is also accessible by road.

DMashpee has a rich history and is known for its distinctive Wampanoag culture and is the site of the headquarters of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe. This federally recognized tribe holds an annual pow-wow at which they display their traditional activities and crafts.

MASHPEE EVENTS

The Annual Mashpee Christmas parade includes floats, marching bands, carolers and runs from Mashpee Commons to South Cape Village. This is a unique night-time parade where every float is illuminated. There is free hot cocoa throughout the parade and special activities for kids.

The annual Mashpee Wampanoag pow-wow, held on the first weekend of July, celebrates their heritage and culture with three days of activities. Events include traditional dances, drumming, arts, crafts, and music. Native crafts and cuisine are showcased, including a New England Clambake – first invented by the tribe centuries ago.

The annual Mashpee Oktoberfest is held in early October at the Village Green in Mashpee Commons. There is traditional German food, a German Bier Garten, Irish Step dancing, and live music. There is a 10K road race, 5k walk or run and a free kids’ fit run as well as other kids’ activities.

THINGS TO DO IN MASHPEE

Mashpee has lots of open space. Hike the trails, paddle your canoe or kayak and watch the birds and wildlife at the Mashpee River Reservation or the Waquoit Bay National Reserve. There is lots of open space to enjoy. The Mashpee Wildlife Refuge has been established with the goal of preserving over 5,800 acres of marshes, white cedar swamps, rivers and vernal pools.

There are two large freshwater beaches at Attaquin Park and John’s Pond, great for quiet relaxation and swimming. For saltwater, head to the mile long South Cape Beach State Park, a beautiful barrier beach ideal for sunbathing, fishing, swimming and with miles of trails, it is also great for walking.

If the rain clouds move in, it’s time to visit Mashpee Commons. Walk, shop and explore this open air marketplace that is chock full of boutique stores, cinemas and restaurants, as well as big name stores such as GAP, Lane Bryant, Pottery Barn, and Williams Sonoma. There are frequent wine and food tastings, bowling, and live entertainment.
